There are 2 criteria for paying Zakat al-Maal (zakat for the property or wealth) for the gold and silver. If a Muslim's gold met these criteria, therefore he/she must pay zakat for the gold and silver owned. These ttwo criteria, are:
- The gold is owned a year. The gold that is owned less than a year is not obligated for zakat.
- Reaching Nisab. The Nisab for gold is 85 grams of pure gold.
How to calculate?
1. For the gold/silver that is not used or stored, or only used once a year the way to calculate is:
Total amount of gold x the gold price x 2.5 %.
2. For the combination of the stored and the used gold.
(Owned gold - used gold) x gold price x 2.5 %.
