What Is Zakat or Zakah?



The word zakah or zakat literally means growth or increase. In Syaria definition it means as a struggle to purify the waelth owned by muslim. Islam sees that other people actually has the right inside other people's wealth. The wealth gained from bussiness need to be purified. In Islamic jurisprudence, the term Zakah or zakat means purifying wealth throght giving some portion of somebody's private asset. This giving aims to help other people who are in need. For a muslim zakah is an obligation determined by Allah. It is part of five Islamic principles beside shalat and haj.

Zakah is diffrent compared to "shadaqah". Shadaqah means as sunnah and not obligated. It is recomended to muslim to give their welath in some portion to other people in need. Al-Qur'an and Sunnah actually also use the term Shadaqah as zakat but actually the meaning of these two words is diffrent according to islamic jurisprudence.

Allah said in his Holy Qur'an:

“Take a portion of the wealth given (zakat) and for that you’ll purify them”.

This verse explains that zakah actually is not only an obligation for muslims. It is also a right for people are determined as people who can receive it.
